Dr Paul Evans FEA, writer,
Guardian Country Diarist, playwright, poet,
broadcaster, environmental journalist and senior lecturer in creative writing at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Biography
Like many in his generation, Paul began to write poems in his teens. Early inspiration from lyrics of folk traditions, popular music and Beat poetry lead to a wider interest in the Romantics, Oriental poetry and Nature poetry. His own writing combined natural history and psycho-spiritual interests in Nature, place, landscape and journey and was grounded by his working experience as a gardener. He began to do readings with the Anglo Welsh Poetry Society in the late seventies and collaborated with musicians, forming a number of bands which performed widely around Britain. When work took him to New York in the mid 80s he began performing in NYC particularly with the NY Writers and Artists Underground. Back in Britain in the 90s and working for nature conservation organisations, he developed a narrative, documentary style from his nature writing, environmental journalism and philosophy. Since then, as a freelance writer and broadcaster, this form has morphed into radio poems and award winning drama-documentaries with aural landscapes by sound recordist Chris Watson, produced for BBC Radio 4 by Sarah Blunt, and performance pieces either alone or with musical collaborators. Paul has been a contributor of Country Diaries for The Guardian since 1992, and he thinks of his three diaries a month as a continuous work of nature writing that so far amounts to c.302,400 words. He also writes Nature Watch columns for the Guardian Weekly published in 173 countries, feature articles for The Guardian and for magazines such as BBC Wildlife, Geographical, The National Trust Magazine, Natural World and Country Living. His radio broadcasting began with reports for Costing the Earth on BBC Radio 4 then moved to the BBC Natural History Unit as a regular writer and presenter of Radio 4 programmes, strands such as Nature, World on the Move, Saving Species and Living World. His feature programmes are based on creative nature writing about places such as Wicken Fen, Islay, The Wrekin, Orford Ness and Dungeness. Paul holds a PhD in philosophy from Lancaster University and is a Fellow of the English Association. He became an academic in 2010, setting up the Travel & Nature Writing MA at Bath Spa University and is currently a senior lecturer in the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Review of Field Notes from the Edge by Prof. Terry Gifford, poet & ecocritic
''From data to dream, from virus to vision, Field Notes from the Edge is not only the touchstone for future nature writers, it is, for readers, an exemplary and challenging reminder of why we should mitigate the Anthropocene from our own edgelands."
The leading international weekly for literary culture.
Where the wild things are
Nick Groom
"The latest crop of nature-writing books, and wildness is all. There’s a quiet ferocity running through these three very different volumes, powerful yet subtle, refreshingly practical and quotidian – and leagues away from the teen fantasies of George Monbiot with his schemes for “rewilding”. So we have John Lewis-Stempel retro-farming a field of wheat, John Wright rootling about in hedges, and Paul Evans in rapt communion with the fairy folk .....
....Thus the landscape does not need to be made strange by wheezes to reintroduce charismatic species; it is already magical for those who have the eyes (and imagination) to see. Evans’s book is a manifesto for fey living rather than rewilding: “I am fascinated by the idea that some places frighten us for reasons we don’t understand; places that feel weird, eerie, sinister, the eldritch places (from the Old English for a strange country, the Otherworld)”. Evans wants us to become more experienced in immaterial encounters, alive to the “eco-gothic” rather than being victims of ecophobia – the anxiety that “Nature bites back” despite human attempts to control and harness it through managing (and denuding) the environment ".
Field Notes' magic lies partly in the sheer quality of the prose, partly in Evans' ability to loop together disparate threads in a way that feels both natural and carefully patterned: images and words recur, subtle altered each time, layering meaning upon meaning so that each chapter becomes rich with significance. It makes for a profoundly satisfying read.
